What is an Art Hive?

An Art Hive is a community art studio that welcomes everyone as an artist. At its heart, an Art Hive is about inclusion, respect, learning, and responding creatively to things that matter to each community.

An Art Hive:

  1. Welcomes everyone as an artist and believes art-making is a human behavior.
  2. Fosters self-directed experiences of creativity, learning, and skill sharing.

  3. Provides free access as promoted by the gift economy.

  4. Celebrates the strengths and creative capacities of individuals and communities.
  5. Encourages emerging grassroots leaders of all ages.
  6. Shares resources, including the abundant materials available for creative reuse.
  7. Experiments with ideas through humble inquiry and arts-based research.
  8. Exchanges knowledge about funding strategies and economic development.
  9. Partners with colleges and universities to promote engaged scholarship.
  10. Gardens wherever possible to renew, regenerate, and spread seeds of social change

What to Expect

A welcoming space where creative self-expression takes center stage. Participants can drop in at any time during our opening hours. No registration or prior art-making experience is needed. Please introduce yourself as you arrive at the space, and when possible, keep your cameras on so we can all be with and witness each other. Regarding microphones, please consider your and others' comfort level regarding noise. Feel free to mute and unmute yourself as needed.

Art Materials

Look around you; our homes are full of exciting materials beaming with possibilities. Whether you drink your tea or coffee or choose to use them as watercolors, there is no limit to what we can create with what we already have.

Self-Directed Art Exploration

Through art-making and spontaneous discussions, participants discover and explore their own creative identities, narratives, and personal agency.

Community

An Art Hive, also known as a "Third Space," is a place between home and work or school, where participants of all ages, abilities, walks of life, ethnicities, and genders come together to inhabit the space as community artists and neighbors. As an online art hive, we might be connecting from our actual homes; however, while our screens are on and we create as a community, our kitchen and dining tables will become virtual third spaces where we all welcome each other.

Safety and Inclusivity

This group is dedicated to fostering a creative, accessible, and welcoming space where participants can explore their creativity and share experiences, concerns, and successes free from judgment. Sharing and discussion are always optional, depending on your comfort level.

Languages

This art hive will be facilitated in English.
