Art Can Heal Montreal (ACHM)
We are a collective group of oncology patients and their loved ones, creative arts therapists, arts-based researchers and artists affiliated with Cedars CanSupport/McGill University Health Centre Oncology departments. We encourage all forms of art-making, crafting, and creative arts therapies that inspire and heal following an illness diagnosis, during and following treatments, and in end-of-life care.
As a community hub for people living with cancer, their loved ones, and their health practitioners, ACHM facilitates art-making on a personal, collective and community level. We organize and curate open exhibits, as well as art-based supportive spaces and other wellbeing projects. We are also involved in several research studies to better understand how creative processes and supportive spaces benefit those affected by cancer. In addition, members of ACHM are developing a blog sharing treatment-friendly recipes and a variety of artworks made by patients and supporters. Art exhibits, research, presentations, and an online presence provide an empowering opportunity for our patients to share aspects of their journey. The larger community, in turn, has an opportunity to witness and better understand patient experiences.
We recently had our second public art show at La Ruche d’Art in St-Henri. This exhibit revolved around the idea of creativity as a form of resilience following a diagnosis of cancer. Artists affected by cancer braved new forms of expression to explore their experiences through art and interpersonal sharing. Artworks were created independently, in open studios and art therapy sessions at Cedars CanSupport, and by members of the Art Saving Life Foundation.
Currently, CanSupport and ACHM enjoy a collaborative partnership with La Ruche d’Art St Henri, where the CanSupport open studio will be hosted throughout the summer (Mondays, 1-4pm, 4525 St. Jacques). Please come join us! The open studio is available weekly to explore your inner muse with a broad range of media and activities. No experience necessary – we welcome patients living with cancer and their loved ones and oncology staff too.
