He was later elevated to full champion status after Jaron “Boots” Ennis moved up to 154 pounds and vacated the belt.
That victory changed the perception of Romero.
Before facing Garcia, Romero had suffered setbacks against Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz, but the win over Garcia demonstrated that he remained capable of producing a major upset against an elite opponent.
Now he had to prove that the performance was not an isolated moment.
The biggest question surrounding Romero was his inactivity. He had been out of the ring for approximately 15 months before returning for this title defense.
A long layoff can affect timing, distance management and reaction speed, particularly against an opponent as technically gifted as Lopez.
However, Romero's physical strength and punching power remain major advantages.
